often in doing custom work for clients, i get to hear all about the details of the upcoming celebration. and, when i'm lucky, my clients will share pictures of aforesaid event and the little guest of honor.  its one of the perks of my job that has quickly become one of my favorites.  as cheesy as it may sound, i relish every snapshot, every smile, every detail...i am always thrilled and inspired to see how each of my creations is used, as well as to see the smiles it all put on everyones' faces.  and besides, i have found that i prefer putting smiles on kids faces with fun stuff they'll hopefully remember, rather than coming at them with a stethoscope or needle...lol.

in the two years i have been operating The Crepe Confectionary out of my little home studio, i have been blessed with some truly inspiring clients, but i wanted to take a moment to introduce you all to one special lady i feel truly lucky to have as a patron.  she hails from the grand old state of texas, and her name is jessica...she's the stellar mom of one very lucky little boy named jackson.  jessica first contacted me two years ago to help with the decorative embellishments for jackson's first birthday, which was crafted to be 'A Whale of a Time', and i shared a peek of the decor here.  i knew, even back then, that jessica and i were on the same creative wavelength.  she would come to me with the seed of an idea, a vision of which only she had in her head, and she entrusted me to help bring it to life.  not only was i inspired by jessica's ideas and suggestions, but i was touched that she put her creative faith in me...

i was honored when jessica contacted me again to help her throw jackson's 2nd birthday bash, which was to be a huge july 4th party on  the beach.  i immediately had a million darling little ideas for the decorations, and couldn't be happier to get started on gathering my materials.  needless to say, when i am approached by a client with an idea for a large decor package, the creative half of my brain quickly gets carried away -- i invest in the event mentally, imagining all the little details i would focus on as if i were the one throwing the bash.  the reality is, however, i'm not the hostess, and so i have to rein myself in and focus all my creative energies on the requested pieces for the client.  i think it is why i feel such a creative kinship with jessica...when i peruse her photos of the big day, i always say, 'wow!  that's exactly what i would have done!' or 'yeah!  that's such an awesome idea!'...lol.

no matter what, jessica, and so many other great clients like her, never fail to amaze me with their ideas and creative endavors of their own...i am always wowed...and encouraged...and privileged.  its a feeling very akin to the one i used to get when i knew i had really helped someone back when i was doctoring.  it is all about connection, at least for me.  connecting with another like-minded person out there in the world is really what its all about...or else, why are we here?

i ain't hiding...

  

i'm just...immersed in enjoying digging my hands into the dirt of my garden...and soaking up sun with friends...and taking long strolls to no where with my puppy...and sipping yummy glasses of wine under the stars...

and it's just been really, really difficult to pull myself away from living life to blog here...i'm not done by any means, but i am practicing being present in the moments of my life.  and i sincerely hope you all are as well! 

please do stay tuned, though...i have been working too...there will be some brand spanking new patriotic items added to the shop, and i've been dreaming up all new treats for my halloween line for this fall.  sometimes coming up for air, when you're so engrossed in your work, and just living for a little while, can be the best source of inspiration.  your brain just...relaxes.  it's as if all you have to do is clear a little space in your brain, and suddenly, there's room for daydreaming and imagining.  it really is the best advice i can offer, not just to other artists trying to navigate their way through the waters of capitalism, but to anyone attempting to live a more meaningful, well-rounded life.

greetings from San Francisco...

i returned from san francisco just a couple of days ago, and i think i am finally recovering.  honestly, i think i'm more in mourning because it came and went so fast! lol...san francisco is such an inspiring city, in so many ways, and each time i am there, a part of me feels very much at home.

i won't bore you all with a detailed recap, but i did want to share some photos of my time...these are images that will be stuck in my head for a while to come...i actually can't wait to start playing and working with my hands again!

i literally spent days in golden gate park...lol.  it was truly beautiful, with so many different 'rooms' and areas for varied uses by the citizens of the area.  the above photo was taken upon the entrance to the AIDS memorial grove that is hidden away inside the park.  this spot truly did take my breath away as i came down the stairs into the grove...it was a masterpiece of garden design and architecture.

the architecture throughout the city and outlying areas is pure heaven for a historic buff such as myself.  these were just some of the 'painted ladies' along haight street...coincidentally, this is also the same neck of the woods where many of the great artists and musicians of the 60's lived...janis joplin, the jefferson airplane, and the grateful dead.

the palace of fine arts at dusk was the perfect spring evening walk...the colors were unbelievably vivid.  i could have sat here and sketched columns and arches forever...

we also took a day trip to napa to visit some of the many wineries...the vistas and imagery were absolutely stunning, and every where i looked, i seemed to be gasping and snapping photos...lol.  i got so many ideas for projects and pieces...i had to remind myself sometimes to just stop and breath and take it all in.

the view of the pacific on the way down from mount tamalpais...it was raining pretty hard that day, but we decided to trek up anyway.  i'm so glad we did, because everything was so astoundingly lush and green once we began climbing to the top...the trees and the moss seemed truly alive.

on my last day, we strolled through the japanese tea gardens...it was so peaceful and felt so deceptively, genuinely 'japanese', it was hard not to believe you were actually in japan...lol.  i came home with a million ideas for small projects in my own garden...now, if only it would stop raining here in buffalo long enough so i can get out into the garden, that would be lovely!

i am so grateful that i was fortunate enough to travel, and do so safely, to a city that i love, to spend time with the friends i have grown to love...i have so many other images i want to share, so many inspiring snapshots, and i will do so, in time...til then, thanks for sharing in some of my travel memories!

Spring Happenings...

i've been as busy as a bee, soaking up as much of the burgeoning spring season as i can and celebrating it!  it's funny really, because it seems like just last week that i was quietly pining for the snow mounds to melt and the skies to turn blue...and all of a sudden, my wish came true!

plenty of new items have been added to the shop to help you bring some spring sparkle to your home this season.  i've been glittering eggs and ornaments, and birthday party hats are getting hot again as well!  i attribute my recent 'spring' in creativity to the return of the sun.  i feel like i have a million ideas for new pieces and product lines, but just not enough hours in the day.  so, i make certain to have my sketch journal attached to my person as much as possible so that i can jot down ideas or sketch out possible designs.

having a smart phone handy is awfully nice too, since i can take pictures of nearly anything that inspires me (like the crocuses that jack and i snapped above when out on our walk this afternoon), but my impulse is usually to reach for a pencil and my pad before reaching into my pocket to grab my camera phone...i swear there is something inside me that makes me want to resist actually using technology in my day to day.  i mean, i'm aware of all the great apps and programs and websites and gadgets out there that could help me streamline my business and my creative process, but i spend my days imagining the past and trying to replicate it in the present...sometimes it just doesn't jive, you know?  lol...

however, i will admit that i finally broke down and embraced the wonderfulness that is QuickBooks...and, i'm pretty happy to declare that it has saved. my. life. it took me two very long, arduous weeks of receipt organizing and data input, but it feels sooo good to account for everything i've done thus far with The Crepe Confectionary.  it makes me feel legitimate as a business owner, and it allows me to measure my successes and failures in a very meaningful way.  i'm still getting the hang of the program's user interface, but i have found features that i love, such as reports that show me how much each of my customers has spent with me or tallies of how many of each product has been sold.  if you're a crafter ready to take the plunge and make your 'biz' official, i highly recommend procuring yourself your own QuickBooks account.  you will thank me for it, trust me!

spring is also bringing with it a ton of new opportunities for The Crepe Confectionary, both creative and financial.  for instance, i'm in the midst of a number of photography projects with a couple of photographers from around the country, wherein my creations will be featured in various shoots.  i'm thrilled about these creative collaborations, and can't wait to expand my horizons as a folk artist.  i was also very pleased to be informed recently that my work has been featured on Meyer Imports' blog site.  if you're not already familiar with Meyer Imports, i greatly encourage you to take a clicky-click on over to their site.  this import company is responsible for bringing us some of the highest quality glitters around, and i am proud to say that they are my main supplier of german glass glitters.  they carry a number of other crafty items as well, such as small diorama kits, mushrooms, and scrap pictures.

and in one last, final bit of news, i have begun playing with my tumblr account.  if you're not aware of what tumblr is, head on over to tumblr.com and have a look see for yourself.  its a 'micro-blogging' platform that allows you to quickly and easily post pictures, videos, links, quotes...anything, really.  its a more visual platform than a regular blogging site such as blogger or typepad, and i like how i can post things there that inspire or interest me, and i don't have to feel obligated to write a blog post to accompany it.  you can find me here:

Out with the cold, in with the woo...

its still snowing here, off and on from day to day, but its beginning to seem like the frozen grip of our icy seasonal temperatures is finally starting to ease and the mounds of snow are now melting...thankfully.  i love where i live, partly because i can enjoy the transformation that occurs with each change of season, but winter is the only one that cannot seem to pass quickly enough for me or my spirit!

i am heartened that spring is just a mere twenty days away...but it also helps to find little ways to help alleviate the spring fever that sets in right about this time each year.  for instance, i splurge a little more often (if i can get away with it) on fresh flowers or plants to place about the house.  this weekend, my wegman's had the most beautifully colored bunches of fresh Stock (Matthiolo incana) flowers.  i chose the pale blushy pink ones that you see above, and gathered them up with some delicate baby's breath.  they've been placed on the coffee table in the family room, and you can smell their romantic fragrance every time you walk into the room...(sigh).  it really does help to lift one's mood, to bend over and place your nose amongst such delicately perfumed blooms.  i mean, how can you not help but smile?

you know what else helps even the most horrible cases of spring fever?  getting out of town!  and this lucky girl gets to go here in just a few short weeks:

san franciso is one of my favorite cities to be in...its just so groovy and laidback, and it totally appeals to the hippy in me (obviously).  so come late april, i'll be back there, touring Napa wineries, riding trolley cars, strolling the haight, climbing mt. tamalpais, and chilling at the wave organ.  there are a ton of 'need to see' places on my san francisco wish list, but i'm really looking for the unique, out of the way, only the locals and 'those in the know would know about' places...are there tiny little shops full of dresdens and millinery someplace nearby?  quiet little boutiques brimming with crafting treasures tucked into those hills?  perhaps a forgotten little antique place full of old photos and books near chinatown? 

i'm looking for input folks!  if you love san francisco as much as i, i would love to hear your favorite places to see, eat, shop, enjoy...leave me a comment below and help a girl out!  and, try to remember that all winters end, no matter how cold and icy!

a little show and tell...

just about died that hubby surprised me with dita von teese's 'Burlesque: On The Art Of The Teese' and that my mom and dad actually bought me these cotton candy pin up pumps for my birthday last weekend!

just check out those velvet bows and the tiny ruffle!  i cannot wait to wear these with my pin up pencil skirt...as soon as the snow and mud go away, that is!

and my little bro showered me with a mushroom-inspired gift of these mercury glass mushrooms and one of my favorite films, 'Know Your Mushrooms'.  i am certain that my family finds both of my obsessions -- mercury glass and mushrooms -- to be a bit eccentric, but i couldn't be happier that they indulge me anyway.

i also got this nicol sayre halloween witch to add to my growing halloween collection...

and found these treasures while antiquing this past week at some of my favorite treasure-hunting spots...i fell in love with that picture of a family in a meadow as soon as i saw it.  the back has a handwritten note that says 'in memory of a very good lunch, aug 12th, 1903'.   i'm always happy to give a new home to these antiquated artifacts, loving them now and safeguarding them for future generations to appreciate.  maybe one day after i'm gone, when my belongings have been snatched up by an estate sale or thrift shop, these old things will be picked up by someone else who shares my passion for preservation...i hope they appreciate them as much as i do.

handmade confections for your valentine crafting...

while a lot of people argue that valentine's day is just a 'hallmark holiday', created and manipulated to drive up greeting card and gift sales during an otherwise retail-starved period, i happen to find this particular holiday rather charming...primarily for its long and rich history of ephemera.  i would be willing to bet that there has been more paper ephemera created throughout the last century and a half or so for this holiday than any other, including christmas.  a simple google image search for 'vintage valentine' should prove my point.

i am also really charmed by the history of valentine's day, especially the evolution of our traditions and rituals for this holiday.  it is just as long, varied, and culturally specific as halloween, and i find that incredibly fascinating.  so while you may already know that we celebrate the holiday to commemorate St. Valentine's death -- and St. Valentine, by the way, is believed to be the patron saint of love and romance, since he continued to perform secret marriages for lovers in defiance of a decree of celibacy by the reigning roman emperor of the time -- you may not know that the earliest known valentine was given by the Duke of Orleans to his wife in 1415.  the tradition of giving a small token of love or affection to one's beloved continued to gain in popularity throughout the following centuries.

before the age of industrialization made printed materials such as cards and postcards widely available to the masses, valentine's were mostly made by hand.  and it is for this reason that i indulge in the idea of 'celebrating' valentine's day -- this was a practice that spanned all social classes and pervaded more than a few countries and cultures.  no matter who you were, rich or poor, upper or lower classed, male or female, this was the very concept of the 'thought counting' in action.  whether it was a hastily written poem, an elaborately trimmed card, or a frilly box of sweets, it was significant that one took the time to acknowledge their love for one special person...(sigh).
